Scholarship

Because the Internet is funded primarily by advertising, e-commerce, special interests and personal passions, one can rarely find the best thinking of this generation available for free unless the thinking serves the purposes of some Web site or some current trend. When it comes to free resources, there is a preponderance of pop culture, e-commerce and trendy issues. (see "Respecting Heritage and the Classics while Mining the Millennium.")

The best minds and the best writers still find printed books the primary medium and the main coinage for intellectual discourse and expression. Or they may charge thousands of dollars - like Esther Dyson - for an electronic subscription to their best thinking.

Thinkers and commentators with credentials, experience and a solid basis for publishing still rely primarily upon printed books as information delivery systems.

If you are looking for the best current thought on most subjects (even Web design) you will want to check out the offerings of Amazon.Com or your local independent bookstore.
