Poetry by Jamie McKenzie

Awakening

I will grow my garden
Soon
As Spring arrives
But first
I have much work to do
Pruning
Raking
Cleaning up the fallen branches
Leaves
And broken dreams
Of yesterday

Winter has a way of cooling things
Way down
Of giving us a chance to rest
Think things over
And plant seeds for the Spring
Good intentions
Resolutions
And vows
Like daffodils, tulips and irises
Bright
Lovely
Rows of blooms to rise
Eagerly
As the sun warms them in their winter beds

I will grow my garden
With some abandon
A dash of caution
A tender hand
Knowing that my mornings
And my days
Will brighten
As the roses climb
And the blossoms open
