Be a lady tonight

I asked the lady to dinner
But as luck would have it
She never appeared
Stood me up
And left me standing there
Alone
Bereft
And out of luck

I placed my bets
Pleaded for mercy
Said some prayers
Made some promises
And watched the wheel spin
To no avail
While the lady seemed busy
Elsewhere
And the ball kept dropping
Hopping
And falling
Landing on every number but mine
