Boys will be boys

Boys will be boys
They chuckle
Excusing them now
For crimes committed then
The rapes
The almost rapes
The assaults and indecencies
As if youth
And adolescence
Were an excuse
Absolving them of guilt
Of blame
Of responsibility
As if being young
And male
Was license enough
And we should just let sleeping dogs lie

This poem was prompted by coverage of Brett Kavanaugh's nomination
to the Supreme Court and Ronan Farrow's coverage of his possible
sexual assault while at Yale as well as apologists who clamored "Boys
will be boys!"
